How to Choose an Empty 510 Cartridge for HHC and CBD Distillate

How to Choose an Empty 510 Cartridge for HHC and CBD Distillate

I get the same email a few times a month: “half my cartridges leaked” or “they taste burnt after ten puffs.” Nine times out of ten it’s not the oil and it’s not a bad batch — it’s that the cartridge was never right for that fill in the first place. The brands that avoid this all figure out three things before they order: inlet size, coil resistance, and capacity. Get those right and the hardware just works. Get them wrong and you’re refunding customers.

So let’s go through all three. By the end you’ll know which empty 510 thread cartridge fits your oil, and you won’t have to burn a sample order to learn it.

Empty 510 thread vape cartridge SKU 2101 — 1.0ml ceramic coil, 4×2.0mm inlet, HHC and CBD distillate wholesale
SKU 2101 — 1.0ml ceramic coil. 4×2.0mm inlet for HHC and full-spectrum CBD. The most-ordered 510 config for European brands.

Variable 1 — Inlet Hole Size: The One Spec That Cannot Be Guessed

The inlet holes are the little channels at the base of the cartridge that let oil feed into the coil. This is the spec people skip, and it’s the one that causes the most returns. Get it wrong and you land in one of two ditches:

  • Holes too small for your oil viscosity: the oil can’t wick fast enough, the coil runs dry, and you get a harsh burnt taste within 10–15 puffs. Customers return the product.
  • Holes too large for a thin oil: the oil floods the coil at room temperature, leaks through the airpath, and pools at the mouthpiece. Customers return the product.

For thick stuff — HHC distillate, full-spectrum CBD, anything resinous — the spec that works is 4 holes × 2.0mm. Big enough that a high-viscosity oil can actually feed the coil under its own weight, but not so big that it floods. This is the inlet I ship most to European brands, and it’s become the de facto standard for a reason.

Empty 510 vape cartridge 2403 — mouthpiece, body, and inlet structure shown separated, wholesale bulk
SKU 2403 with components separated: cartridge body, removable mouthpiece cap, and the inlet channel base. Inspection before filling is straightforward.

Rough guide by what you’re filling:

Oil TypeApproximate ViscosityRecommended Inlet
HHC distillateVery high (>6,000 cP)4 × 2.0mm
Full-spectrum CBD oilHigh (3,000–6,000 cP)4 × 2.0mm
CBD distillate + terpenesMedium (1,000–3,000 cP)4 × 1.6mm
Nicotine salt / e-liquidLow (<500 cP)Not 510 — use RELX-compatible pod

Not sure how thick your oil is? Quick test: load a syringe, hold it tip-down at room temperature, and time a single 0.5ml drop. If it takes more than about 8 seconds to fall, you’re in 4×2.0mm territory.

Variable 2 — Coil Resistance: 1.2Ω vs 1.3Ω and Why It Matters for HHC

Resistance is just how much heat the coil throws at a given voltage. Most 510 batteries run somewhere between 3.3V and 3.7V. At the top of that range:

  • A 1.2Ω coil draws approximately 11.4W — enough heat to fully vaporise dense HHC distillate in a single draw. This is the standard for most European CBD and HHC brands.
  • A 1.3Ω coil draws approximately 10.5W — slightly cooler draw, produces a tighter mouth-to-lung (MTL) sensation. Better suited to formulations with lower viscosity or brands positioning for a smoker-switcher audience.

For thick distillate, go 1.2Ω — you want the heat. The only time I steer people to 1.3Ω is when they’re building for ex-smokers who want a tight, cigarette-style pull. That’s what the KB cartridge is for: 1.3Ω, slim 10mm body, narrow draw.

SKU 2212 empty 510 cartridge — ceramic mouthpiece, 1.0ml, two units shown on dark background wholesale
SKU 2212 with full ceramic mouthpiece. Ceramic extends from coil to lip contact — no metal taste, no plastic off-gassing.

And don’t even consider cotton or mesh for thick oil. Ceramic is the only coil that holds up to resinous distillate run hot, batch after batch. If you’re still on the fence about coil type, I went deep on this here: Ceramic vs Cotton Coil — Which Empty Pod Actually Works for Thick Oil.

Variable 3 — Capacity: What 0.5ml, 1.0ml, and 2.0ml Actually Mean for Your Brand

Capacity drives three things at once: what you can charge, what each unit costs you to fill, and how cleanly it clears EU customs. Each size has its own logic:

  • 0.5ml — lower fill cost per unit, higher retail margin per ml, typically positioned as a premium SKU or a trial-size product. Common in German pharmacy-adjacent CBD lines.
  • 1.0ml — the volume sweet spot for most European CBD and HHC brands. Below the 2ml TPD threshold. Fills fast on semi-automatic equipment. Our top-selling 510 size.
  • 2.0ml+ — used in markets without TPD restrictions. Southeast Asia, Middle East, parts of Eastern Europe. Higher fill cost but fewer units needed per revenue target.

TPD note: In the EU, 2ml is the maximum tank capacity for nicotine-containing products under Article 20. If your fill is CBD or HHC (no nicotine), this restriction does not apply — but many brands stay at or below 2ml for import simplicity at customs. See our FAQ for the full TPD discussion.

The Three 510 Cartridges QQ Vape Recommends for European CBD and HHC Brands

Across the brands I work with in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and the UK, three SKUs from the 510 thread range cover almost everything people actually order:

SKU 2102 empty 510 thread cartridge — 0.5ml and 1.0ml dual capacity, wood and ceramic mouthpiece, wholesale OEM
SKU 2102: dual-capacity (0.5ml / 1.0ml), screw assembly, three mouthpiece options — wood, ceramic, zinc alloy. Premium tier for brands with a luxury positioning.

KB0.5 / 1.0ml4 × 1.6mm, 1.3ΩSmoker-switcher brands — slim 10mm body, tight MTL draw

All three are made to order, 1,000 pcs minimum per colour. Logo printing from 1,000 pcs, custom packaging from 2,000 pcs. Once the deposit clears, production runs 7–10 days.

How to Order a Sample Before Committing to a Bulk Run

New formulation, or you just changed filling equipment? Test the hardware first — every time. The sample pack exists for exactly this: $120 flat with DHL to EU/UK included, up to 3 cartridge styles, 20–30 pcs each, and you can pick the inlet size and resistance for each one.

How I tell people to test: fill at room temperature, cap straight away, stand them upright for 24 hours, then draw 10 puffs at 3.7V on a normal 510 battery. No leak, no flooding, no burnt taste after that? The hardware and your oil are a match.

Got a specific oil and not sure where to start? Send me the details and I’ll tell you the SKU and inlet to test — no guessing.
